Red face "September 11, My issue"

I will only post in this thread this once. If it devolves into political manifestos and uneducated hoopla, I won't bother engaging in the debate.

I think anawiel's thread deserved more respect, so in the spirit of aggro-ing the tards in gw, I will now share my own 'remembrances' of that fateful day in our nation's history.

On that day, I had been suffering from major depression for weeks, and had hardly left my home.

I am not an avid fan of the television, which I will here on out refer to as the idiot-box, so I had not been watching anything. I namely used it then and now for gaming and nothing else.

I was awoken at about 4 pm or so, by my immediate neighbor banging on my door. Groggy, pissy, and self-pity notwithstanding, I was not a kind soul when I was like that. I talked to him, and he kept asking me 'did you see yo?"

I obviously had no idea what the bastard was raving on about, so finally I snapped and demanded to know what the hell was his madness all about.

He half dragged me into his home and on the news I saw the tower being hit. It kept looping. I instantly knew that this was going to go on for months, whatever in fact it was that I was seeing. I sat down, grabbed a cold one and listened.

Then it hit me that I am not immune. I live in a world that is constantly evolving. There are stakes to raise and risks to take. There are people besides me in this place, and they are dying all around me, and the irony is, it could have been any of us here on these forums. I realized, it could have been me. It could have been barney bubblefan down the road. We are not vaccuums within ourselves.

My uncle was in NYC on that day. He was there on business, and had some free time, so had taken to driving around in the company car, taking pictures of the sites of the city proper.

Building one got him.

All I will say in closing is, as I said before, the real world got me by the balls that day. There are no districts to swap to in real life. There is no insulation strong enough to stem the tide of human condition. People have personalities, dreams, ambitions, hopes, fears, and goals.

Reality doesn't care, and there is not one god damn thing I can do about it.

It WILL degenerate in that, no way around it. Best thing we can do is ignore the trolls...

Anyway, I was at school that day, and the very first thing our teacher told us was:

"Guys, the USA is at war now."

That's it. And then she gave us all the details. And when I turned on the TV at home, all I could see was the airplane crashing over and over...

But unlike you, I wasn't REALLY affected on a personal degree by it. To be honest, I'd say the tsunami last year and Katrina last month was when I finally realized that we aren't invincible, that at ANY time our life could be revoked without warning....

That's all I got to say that is relevant. I could ramble about how I think that this tragedy got IMHO blown out of proportions by the masses, but you said no political flamefest, so I'll shut up...

I too think Aniewiel's thread deserved more respect, I think it should've been stickied for the day, and the bad posts simply deleted from it.

It's not about politics or any of that bullshit, the day I say the people jumping from the towers, the planes exploding through the sides of the buildings, and eventually the buildings collapsing within themselves...I was there just knowing what was happening there.

When I think about 9/11, I don't think about George Bush, I don't think about the war on terrorism, I don't think about any political bullshit. I don't even think of the big picture of it being a terrorist attack, I don't give a shit about that. When I think 9/11, I forget about the why, I forget about the reason, all I think about is the death of thousands of people. I don't care who did it, I don't care what we could have done about it, and I don't care about revenge. I care about the lives of human beings, and I care about the families who suffered their losses. I look at the photos and old videos of the attacks and I don't give a shit how or why, I just think about the people inside and about their suffering. Wouldn't make any nevermind to me whether it happened in London, Africa, China, Japan, India, or even Iraq. The way people came together, the way the world pulled through the ordeal is what I think of. The idea is what matters to me, not the politics. And I think this day should be a day of mourning and respect for the heros of that day 4 years ago.

I actually found it more offensive and was personally offended that a post about that was locked when everyone wanted to share their grief.

But onto my story. I was in the 8th grade at the time. School just began and I was at the top floor of my school(4th). My English teacher was speaking when a kid with a good view of the skyline(I live in Brooklyn, it isn't far at all) said "Mrs....I think the World Trade Center is on fire..." My teacher went to the window and said "Oh my God..." now it's usually not a good sign when your teacher does that. The kids rushed to the windows and all started looking, including me of course. I saw a HUGE black smoke cloud above the World Trade Center. I was in shock but I thought maybe there was just a normal fire that got out of hand or something. My next period, everyone was still checking on it in the other class room. My couciller of my academy informed us that a plane crashed into the towers and it is not known if it is an accident or not. Then the other tower became engulfed as well. Now we knew this was an act of terrorism. I didn't think it would be more then a fire but when I saw only one tower standing, I hoped that it was just smoke clogging my view or something. But I was wrong of course. The other one down as well. Parents let kids out of school early, kids cryed and hoped that their family members weren't over there, it was really a horrific site. We even smelled the smoke from there.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with people. You wouldn't go to someone's funeral and say, "Well I know someone down the road from me who was hit by a bus and HE died in a worse way than THIS guy."

They obviously didn't get the idea of the memorial thread.

I wanna ask those people a question.

-----
Do you fart during three minutes silences?
-----

Because that was what that thread was. It was... the LEAST we the unaffected could have done to show our respect for humanity. To show respect that human beings have died. To show that we have a shred of soul inside us.
My sacrifice today, though PITYFULL in comparison, was to watch videos, tv programs just memorials.. and to cry. Something I hate doing. I sat there watching them thinking, "Oh god I musn't cry, I'd be so embarrassed if my family saw me or someone came to the door", then I thought.. oh my god how selfish am I? F*CK if it puts me out, it's MINIMAL!

I understand what people meant about the horrors that happen around the world, but thing is it never hits all of us. I don't ridicule people for not mourning the people of 9/11 just as I wouldn't have ridiculed them if they hadn't mourned the deaths of the posters.
It takes certain things to affect certain people. The World Trade Centre was in New York. It was the hub of America. And the nature of the attack was something that a lot of people haven't seen in their lifetime. I know for one that it will stick in my mind as the first big tragic event I'll ever remember.

Also, take it from someone who knows. When I explain to people that my joint and muscle conditions lead to depression, they tell me to lighten up cos there are MILLIONS of people worse of than me. There's people with cancer, people starving in Africa, people dying in mudslides...

...I'm sorry but, I'm here. I'm not in a mud slide. I had a life I knew exactly like the people who's lives were affected by September 11th.. and it was changed.
Things are a million miles away untill they smack you in the face. I mourn and feel loss because for some freak reason, that morning I decided to see what it was like watching American TV. Anyone in the UK who has Sky will know we get CNN.
I turned it on and watch the whole thing as the people of America would have watched it, so I felt more linked perhaps than the next 15 year old british girl might have.

So I think people understand that loss happens all over the world, but we can't all give £2 to every charity. Not everyone has the get up and go to DO something rather than watch the tv show, sniff into a few tissues and then stick on an action film.
But please do understand that when people care, it's something amazing.

It takes no effort to turn a blind eye, but it does to show respect. I always say to people that it's in their nature to be less then average, so we should bless any effort to be more. Sometimes there's too much pain at home to spare a thought for others, and sometimes there's too much pain in the world to pay your respects to them all.

But that thread was for the little people to show they care. And some people ruined it

...for shame

I remember September 11th vividly! I remember it AS vividly as I did the Kennedy Assasination on November 22 1963. (I was in Third grade Mrs. Fishkin's class. She had the only real telephone in the school then, and got that horrific phonecall)

While I was at work that morning, I had the radio on. It was mainly background talk radio. I was kinda listening, and mostly working. I heard that the World Trade Center got hit by an aircraft. I listen for a minute or two then realized I had one of those cheapie FREE TVs that you get from a store promotion at work. (The 5" screen kind, B&W, with a channel tuner like a radio) I fumbled around and turned it on.

First thing I saw after I finally got it tuned in was a skyscraper with allot of smoke coming out. I could hear Peter Jennings trying to describe what has happened. No one was saying anything about terrorist at that moment.

The phone rings at work, it is a customer. I ask this customer if he has heard about this in New York City? He responds...No and proceeds to order from me. I am a little annoyed of the lack of feeling I was getting from this guy. If I wrote his name here you could think up a zillion stereotypes right off the bat. While I was talking to him I was distracted from the little 5" TV set. Then I notice an explosion. I said to my customer that there is something that just happened....a big explosion! He replied probably just jet fuel and went on with his order. Now I was pretty pissed off. I didn't say anything to him except, that: "I have to go. I want to see this." He was not happy. He could not believe that I was getting off the phone. I didn't care at this point.

As hurtful as stereotypes can be I can understand how they came into being. There is some truth within stereotypes. The Political Correct crowd would not agree with me....so what...they are wrong.

I watched that on my little TV the rest of my working day. I went home and watched it some more. I mainly watched ABC. Peter Jennings was the most real of all the TV anchors. He stayed on TV so long that he was messing up. Tripping over his words. Apologizing for his mistakes. He was tired and would not let go. He was very human that day. When I heard that he was sick and then died so soon, I was very sad. I remember his first broadcast as an anchor in 1966. I was 11 years old. He was young, cool, and the women loved his good looks. Back then, TV anchors were old white guys. Peter Jennings broke that mold.

It was a horrific day. I didn't vote for George W Bush. However, I thought by now the CEO administration would have our citizens fairly well protected by this point in time after such a loss in this country. After watching the Katrina disaster unfold I could clearly see that nothing has really changed.

This is what makes me weep today!

I remember that morning. I called my aunt and uncle to wigh them a happy aniverserry (1st) and they told me to turn on chaneel 5. I couldn't believe it. All I could do was to sit there and say "oh my god" over and over. Going to school that day was pretty wierd every one was somber except for a few who didn't know but soon found out. The flag was at half-mass and all the teachers had gathered in one room and were watching the news. When class started we were told about how short life was and we watched CNN or other news programs half the day. The really emotional people were constantly crying. It was a very bad day and we will always remember it.

Also I believe that peopleshould have carred more about the Tsunami because that killed 150,000 + people. But i was happy when studdents (10 years old) the next day were collecting donations for families of people who had died in 9/11 and then later when donations were asked for the Tsunami and Katrina. When young kids are trying to help people they do not see or now is a good thing.

Perhaps I jumped too soon in closing my own thread but it must be understood that, as a moderator on this forum, my position is precarious. I do not wish to be a focal point but, rather, to try to moderate from behind the scenes. Stepping out and posting that thread was an act of love. My sister lost a dear friend that day---someone I'd actually met and knew. So it was more personal than general.

However, my feeling before closing the thread was that, if I deleted the threads that I personally found to be off topic or offensive to the message I was trying to convey, I would become the center of the thread, thereby skewing it away from what I wished it to be. Call me clairvoyant but I was fairly certain that someone would open a second thread and, well, I was right.

Thank you all for the things you have posted. Remembrance does not cheapen the lives of any victim anywhere in the world. But things that touch us personally or nationally need to be remembered. Remembrance is the stepping stone to a better world. Remembrance begins to bond us ALL together as members of the human race and fellow-travelers in this world.

Yes, good post Aniewiel. Maby if people would stop and think how and when to voice there disagreements, there wouldnt have been a need to close the other thread.

Very nicely posted... to the previous.

Semptember 11, the day that almost everyone's thought and life changed... Turning point of life.

Some who once thought they would just be a no body now believe oneself to be inside a larger picture of the world... No one... is non-existant... Even one smallest object pick off the street, changes the street.

A day I won't forget, and a day I do not wish to see again in the land of America.

I hope other part of the world will soon be rid of these kind of unkindly act as well.

People cry, lie, and die and we all have and will. In 100 years from today everyone on this forum will be dead. It's a shame they had to die unnaturally, but we're all going to die eventually, so it comes down to us just making the most of what we have, and if we don't we're just a waste of space. I'm atheist and once I'm gone I'm nothing. Complete peace, and when ever that comes to be of non thinking of non anything... well... It makes things like Guild Wars seem like nothing and makes me think that our reality isn't even fully understood. Even if there is god, living into eternity in paradise? Hmm, I highly doubt something that great is waiting for every human being once we die that goes to church and is good. It's just not possible, we just get recycled and disappear for good except for what we leave behind. Leave a legacy that others will recognize you by, because if you have no life after death then you're nothing. Nothing but a rambling 15 year old who has yet to see what he has in store for his life with homework papers and computer games. To be one of the people we read in history books is immortality, and that's the closest you'll come to it. A boring person in some kid's history book that no one cares about. Have fun and enjoy yourself and keep blabbering on, look for the better things in life and the off beat things, because there is no second chance. Once you're killed you're not coming back with a death penalty, you're just dead. Regret it before you die, because once you're dead you're not thinking about anything. The last thing to go through your head will be a worm. Maybe I'm just a rambling kid, maybe I'm not. This is your life and your choice to take this and apply and interpret as you will.

on that day , i get out of bad arround 3 pm ( GMT 0 ) ... i was living with firends at that time , that kind of house always full with people , and there we were about 6 or 7 of us , completely horrified ... first thing that comes to my mind is : 3rd world war
it was a world wide huge adrenaline shot
( i dont want to talk about the political side , but i would like to say that , the main objective of that "terrorist atack" was not kill people , just for one simple reason.
3 to 5 k person died , 2 huge buildings and 2 planes to do that ...
now think about how many people go to a football game ? 50 to 80 000 ,... you get a lot more deaths hiting a stadium for exemple ... so i can belive this was a inside job , but its horrible to think it was , even im not american , but im human.

i finish my post with sorrow for those who died in that day in that place.

I was walking to my engineering class when I heard the news from my girlfriend (now my wife ). I was completely amazed/bewildered that something like that had happened. I must say that the country has done a fairly good job of recovering in the past 4 years.

As for the stadium example, a lot of the bigger schools get upwards of 100,000 people. NASCAR is by far the biggest venue... but no need to throw out ideas to any diabolicle minds out there....

Did anyone else in the UK watch the program yesterday, "United by 9/11"?

They covered most areas, that is to say they had interviews with people who had suffered the loss of children, hunsbands.. basically anyone who'd lost someone could have related to someone.

Anyway.. when they started to play the stories from the families who had.. only recieved PIECES of their loved ones... that's when my hands flew to my mouth. And the fact that there are body parts and cremated remains of people who lost their lives on the Staten Island Dump!?!?

..WTF, AMERICA?!?!!?
